she lived in a different time
when luxuries were rare
homemade items common
funds too scarce to spare

given a piece of white muslin
she smoothed it with her hands
too small to make a sheet
this became her plan

a pair of lovely cases
to greet the welcome guest
would adorn the feathered pillows
the head to gently rest

daily chores ended
her sewing task began
by oil lamp into the night
stitching the pair by hand

almost done at last
yet needing a loving touch
once more work worn hands
crochet a border adding much

I have those cases now
not hidden by a spread
but at my kitchen window
her touch to see instead
